There are certain things that you will need to
do for your new American Shorthair
kitten. I will list what I can think of
below.
A litter box - the covered ones help
control smell, Litter box should be cleaned daily (your baby kitten will
need a smaller litter pan to start with)
A litter scoop - They have little slats
that filter the clumps
Litter - We use Tidy Cat for multiple cats
- Buy this for the first time anyway and then slowly add the new litter
you want to use if you prefer a different kind, it will be an easier
transition for the kitten if there are familiar things around.
The kittens shot series may need to be
completed. Your kitten will be up to date on it's shots when you
receive it, but further shots may be necessary to finish the immunization
series.
A safe carrying crate to take your
kitten/cat to the vet or on trips with you
Also your vet may need to give your kitten
a rabies shot after it has reached 3 months of age.
Annual health checks at your veterinarian
with an annual immunization booster, and any other check ups recommended
by your vet.
Clean water daily - dish should be washed
between fillings
Fresh food daily - dish should be washed
between feedings - We feed Purina Kitten Chow dry and if you want to feed
canned food we use Friskies. 1 kitten (8 week old) may eat 1/3 can a
day. Refrigerate non used portions.
A safe environment - no poisonous plants
or open chemical containers
Gentle handling
These are things that kittens /cats like
A scratching climbing post - saves on furniture
An accessible window with a perch/ledge so
they can watch what goes on outside - (preferably a sunny window)
A snuggle bed is enjoyed by many cats, but
some do not use them
Safe Toys made for cats
Love and affection - kittens/cats love
attention, to be petted and talked to & played with
